Four Homestead Radio students took home a total of four first place awards at the 14th annual Terri Hemmert Midwest Regional High School and College Radio Conference at Columbia College Chicago on October 14th.
Seniors Regan Jones, Matt Schreck and Garrett Willis and Junior Cory Balkenbusch each won the highest prize in Radio or Audio category. Jones won in the category of “Interviewing,” Schreck won in the category of “Sports Play-By-Play,” Willis won in the category of “Live On-Air Newscast” and Balkenbusch won in the category of “Voice Over.” Willis also received 2nd places for “Audio Documentary” and “Sports Play-By-Play,” while Balkenbusch got 2nd place in “Live On-Air Newscast.” These four students along with senior Sydney Scholl and junior Abigail Boylan were the only Homestead Radio students who entered the contest.
The all-day event at Columbia College featured sessions and panels moderated by radio industry professionals and educators at both the high school and collegiate levels. The awards ceremony was held in honor of longtime WXRT-FM personality and National Radio Hall of Famer, Terri Hemmert, who was present for the awards ceremony. Hemmert has devoted more than 30 years to her profession and made radio history in 1981 when she became the first female morning drive personality in Chicago on WXRT. She currently hosts a midday radio program on WXRT and produces “Breakfast with the Beatles,” Chicago’s longest-running show devoted to the rock band.
You can hear these students all year long on the airwaves of WCYT, The Point 91.1 FM. Schreck and Willis are the voices of Homestead High School football and boys and girls basketball teams and each co-host “The Huddle” after school on Thursday’s. Jones co-hosts “Shoeless” after school on Wednesday’s and Balkenbusch co-hosts an in-school radio show, “Voice of Reason” on Thursday mornings.
