A few disclaimers to start:

  • I didn’t listen to a ton of new music this year, so this list is not exhaustive.
  • This list is in no particular order- ranking albums just seems silly.

“MY WOMAN” by Angel Olsen. The best parts of coked out era Fleetwood Mac + Patti Smith.

“Human Performance” by Parquet Courts. Short. To the point. The lyrics of this one are eerily similar to my inner monologue.

“Songs For Our Mothers” by Fat White Family. Gross. Offensive. Full of dread and songs about fascism. Yet, somehow the album I listened to the most this year. The final track is a love song written from the perspective of Hitler to Goebbels in the bunker. The album feels like 2016 in a nutshell.

“Post Pop Depression” by Iggy Pop. The biggest surprise of the year. A spiritual successor to “The Passenger” and “The Idiot” that David Bowie produced for Iggy in the 70’s, this time with Josh Homme producing.

“Requiem” by Goat. It isn’t easy to describe Goat but I will give it a shot: Psychedelic Scandinavian tribal music. This is their most wide-ranging record which is a nice change from their prior albums that all sort of found one groove and rode that the entire time. I would love to see them live in 2017 (cough Middle Waves).

“Skeleton Tree” by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Absolutely heartbreaking. I put off listening to this one because I knew it would wreck me. I was right.

“House In The Tall Grass” by Kikagaku Moyo. A great album to zone out to.

“Dusk” by Ultimate Painting. Everytime I hear Ultimate Painting I want to play a guitar. I like that.

“Changes” by Charles Bradley. Title track is a soul cover of the Black Sabbath song, what isn’t there to like about that? Wishing Mr. Bradley a speedy recovery and good health in 2017.

“Third World Pyramid” by Brian Jonestown Massacre. Another surprise on the list. The album is a great mix of the more cinematic songs Anton has been doing lately with some great throwbacks to the “Take It From The Man!” era BJM.

Let me know what I missed. Here’s to a not so terrible 2017.
